In the quiet town of Ashford Hollow, life moved at the pace of the wind through the cottonwoods—slow, predictable, and unremarkable. That was before the young drifter appeared.
He came without warning, stepping out of the dusk like a figure carved from marble and shadow. His presence was a disruption, a ripple in the still water of small-town routine. People noticed him immediately—how could they not? He was beautiful in a way that defied reason, the kind of beauty that silenced conversation and made hearts stutter. Men and women alike felt it, that strange pull, as if gravity itself bent toward him.
No one spoke to him. No one dared. His beauty wasn’t soft or inviting; it was sharp, intimidating, like a blade glinting in the sun. He carried an aura of mystery so thick it clung to him like smoke. He never explained who he was or why he had come. He simply wandered—through Main Street, past the diner windows, along the cracked sidewalks—always barefoot.
That was the strangest thing. Bare feet, padding silently over gravel and dust, through puddles and broken glass. His soles were always dirty, but somehow, impossibly, his feet were perfect—arched and strong, unmarred by the roughness of the world. People noticed. They whispered. But no one asked. Questions felt dangerous around him, like striking a match in a room full of gasoline.
Children stopped their games to stare. Old men paused mid-story, words drying in their throats. Women gripped coffee cups tighter, their thoughts wandering places they wouldn’t admit. Men felt something they couldn’t name—admiration, envy, maybe both. He was a storm in human form, and yet he moved with the calm of someone who belonged nowhere and everywhere at once.
At night, he sat on the edge of the old fountain in the square, moonlight painting his skin silver. He never spoke, never smiled. But the town couldn’t look away. They were drawn to him, helpless against the gravity of his mystery.
And so Ashford Hollow waited—waited for the drifter to reveal something, anything. But he never did. He remained what he had always been: a beautiful enigma with bare feet and eyes that held secrets too heavy for words.
Night-owls, late-night barflies and other nocturnal residents of the town would see the handsome, barefoot eighteen-year-old roaming the streets. He seemed perfectly normal to them… except for the fact that he was clad in pajamas and was shoeless.
Eventually he would collapse on someone’s porch and, inevitably, Homeless Gus would saunter up to the youth and ask what he was doing out so late, and without shoes. When he got no response from the bewildered youth, the vagrant would take it upon himself to kneel in front of the dazed young man and… very gently at first… plant pecking little kisses on the lad’s bare toes. When the blue-eyed drifter still showed no reaction to this, the bold transient would then use his fat tongue to probe in between the lad’s toes. All ten of his toes. The toes on both of his perfectly formed young feet.
Eventually passers-by would see the homeless man blatantly sucking the youth’s toes and ravenously licking the lad’s dirty soles. The eighteen-year-old’s dazed blue eyes would remain fixed… as if he were entranced. And when Gus finally finished licking his soles and sucking his toes clean, the blue-eyed drifter would calmly climb to his now saliva-slicked feet and walk back home.
And once he was back in his family’s apartment on the other side of town, he’d climb back into bed, completely oblivious to what had transpired moments before. Everyone else in the home had always slept through the eighteen-year-old’s nightly jaunts … they were even more clueless of the blue-eyed drifter’s activities than he was!
A woman called deputies the day after one sleepwalk… telling them she saw a transient man sucking on what appeared to be a drugged young man’s toes on the porch of her home on Billings Street.
The 38-year-old woman said she was getting a late-night snack when a man, who looked to be in his late early 40s, walked up and asked him why he was out so late, according to a Corell County Sheriff’s Office incident report. When the youth didn’t respond, the homeless man then proceeded to take advantage of the handsome young man’s bare feet orally.
When the vagrant began to actually bite on the blue-eyed boy’s big toes. The woman said she threw open her front door and screamed at him to stop.
Before the vagrant ran from her porch, he told her, “You ought to take a few licks at that kid’s toes … they’re delicious!”
But the police never came knocking at the door to question the blue-eyed drifter. And night after night he’d make his nightly jaunts out into the street… only to awaken the next morning with saliva-cleansed feet and pruned toes.
